DOTHAN, AL (WTVY) Dothan’s Academy Sports + Outdoors hosted a back to school shopping spree for 30 students at the Hawk-Houston Boys & Girls Club.

The students were given $100 gift cards. They bought items like clothing, backpacks and shoes. This is the eighth year Academy Sports + Outdoors has hosted the shopping spree. The national retailer says it’s their way of giving back to the local community and helping students start the school year off right.

“Your first day is always the most important day when it comes to back to school,” said Nadia Bascombe, Store Director, Academy Sports + Outdoors. “You want to make sure you have your best shirt, your best clothes, your best shoes on, so we’re very excited about being able to be a part of that day.”

Academy Sports + Outdoors hosts 100 similar shopping spree-type events, benefitting more than 3,000 students in the Southeast and Midwest.

If you haven’t done your back to school shopping yet, there’s good news. Alabama’s 12th annual back to school sales tax holiday kicks off Friday, July 21 and runs through Sunday, July 23.
