Update 7/17/17 11:15 am – The man who was fatally shot when he attempted to rob the Crossroads Baptist Church has been identified.
According to a the Dothan Police Department 26 year old Steffon Parreese Valentez Tolver was found deceased in the parking lot when officers arrived on the scene Sunday night.
During the course of the investigation, it was determined that Tolver entered the back door of the church.
Once inside, Tolver robbed the parishioner of approximately $50.00 then attempted to rob a church staff member.
The staff member, fired his personal handgun once, striking Tolver in the upper torso.
Tolver fled out the back door and into the parking lot where he succumbed to his injury.
One man is dead after a church shooting overnight in Dothan.It happened at Crossroads Baptist Church on Westgate Parkway.
According to information provided at the scene, at least two people were at the church when an unidentified black male approached at least one of them. He forced the church member back into the building where he attempted to rob them. The suspected burglar was shot by one of the church members.
The robber fled the building but was found a short time later collapsed in the parking lot. Dothan Police Chief Steve Parrish told WDHN at the scene that investigators were in the early stages and would work through the night piecing the case together.
WDHN has learned this morning that it may take some additional time to identify the robber because he did not have any identification on him.
