How ‘Stuff the Bus’ is helping those in need

The average family is expected to spend more on school and college supplies this year. According to the National Retail Federation, back-to-school spending will reach its second-highest level on record.

That’s why local organizations like the Dothan Education Foundation are trying to help parents prepare for the school year.

It’s one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year. Kids will head back to class in just a few short weeks and now is the time to start preparing.

“In order to go from elementary, to middle, to high school, they need these standard supplies to get there. Not everyone can afford them,” said Joseph Brackins of the Army Aviation Center Federal Credit Union.

Back to school supply lists are pinching some families’ budgets. That’s why the credit union is teaming up with the Dothan Education Foundation to ‘Stuff the Bus.’

“If we can fill this box to the top and give to 20 kids, that’s still 20 kids.”

All thirteen Army Aviation centers in the Wiregrass will have a box in their lobby where you can drop off donations. According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in kindergarten through 12th grade are expected to spend an average of $688.00 on back to school items this year.

“You can’t imagine the smiles on the kids’ faces and the parents as well to know that these were provided for them,” added Brackins.

July 28th is the last day to donate. You can also drop off donations at either the Dothan-Houston County Library or the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce.
