Bail has been set for one of two Florida teens charged in the murder of a recent Dothan High School graduate.
16-year-old Ashanti Williams of Panama City remains behind bars in the Houston County Jail. He’s charged with the murder of 19-year-old Kendarrius Martin.
Thursday, Judge Benjamin Lewis set Williams’ bail at $250,000.
District Attorney Pat Jones said his office has been notified of several death threats that have been made against Williams’ life. According to testimony at a hearing on Thursday, Williams is not believed to be the shooter of martin, but rather an accomplice in his murder.
A preliminary hearing for Williams has been set for July 14th. He will be tried as an adult.
Meanwhile, the suspected shooter in the case, 15-year-old Andre Winn, remains in custody at the Southeast Alabama Youth Service Diversion Center in Dothan. At a hearing Thursday for Williams, District Attorney Pat Jones said Martin was fatally shot by Winn after a lengthy dispute on-line and through text messages.
Police say the motive can’t be classified as gang related at this time. However, some of the people involved were gang-affiliated.
It has not yet been determined if Winn will be tried as an adult. Due to his juvenile status, police and the DA’s office is making sure the investigation is thorough before Winn’s first appearance in court.
